The difference between the true value and the measurement or estimate of a quantity, often expressed as either an absolute error or relative error.

Every measuring device has a limitation. For example, a mercury thermometer can normally read temperature only to the nearest degree Celsius. Therefore, a reading of 25°C should then be written as (25 ± 0.5) °C because it can be any value between 24.5°C and 25.5°C due to its limitation.
